The Floating Islands of the Uros are one of the world's most unique attractions. The Aymara-speaking inhabitants of these islands descend from one of America's oldest civilizations that have, for centuries, kept their traditional values and the lifestyle of their ancestors. The islands are made of totora, a reed that grows in abundance in the shallower waters of the lake. The islander's houses and boats are also made of totora and are being rebuilt as soon as the reed begins to rot. Return to Puno and free time for lunch. In the afternoon we will visit Sillustani, a rocky peninsula surrounded by the enchanting Umayo lagoon. This pre-Incan and Incan archaeological complex is famous for its stone funeral towers called Chullpas, where the Collas buried their nobles and kings. Sillustani is also considered a sanctuary of fertility because of its location, on an apparently magical and religious site. To support this theory the beautiful surrounding countryside has been the subject of several mysterious legends and many people come here to practice meditation. Overnight.
DAY 9 PUNO - LA PAZ
Leaving Puno early in the morning we will head for Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Short panoramic tour of this pilgrimage town and departure by hydrofoil for the Islands of the Moon and the Sun. Tour of the islands and lunch. Continuation to Huatajata. Once there we will visit the Andean Roots Complex which includes the Altiplano Museum, the Indian Chapel, a reproduction of the mortuary towers or Chullpas, and we will meet the Limachi brothers, builders of Ra II and Tigris ships. Finally we will depart by bus to La Paz where we will arrive around 7:30 pm. Lunch included.
