Panama City is three different cities in one: Old Panama, the original emplacement, is today a complex of ruins remaining from the Panama City that Morgan sacked and destroyed in 1671. Colonial Panama, a blend of Spanish and French colonial styles: Colorful buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies, and red tile roofs. And, finally, Modern Panama, a cosmopolitan metropolis of skyscrapers, elegant shops, and international restaurants and clubs. And to top if off the Panama Canal, one of the most impressive engineering works in the world, the link between the Atlantic and the Pacific. DAY 3 PANAMA CITY - PORTOBELO - PANAMA CITY

For two hundred years, Portobelo stood as the main link in the Gold Route between Peru and the Spanish Crown. The Spaniards fortified it with five castles making it almost impregnable, and built one of the most admired ports in the world. Pirates attacked it for decades until Henry Morgan finally made his way through in 1671. The infamous Sir Francis Drake presumably died here during an assault. Today, preserved colonial buildings, African traditions like the Congo Dance, and religious fervor in the legend of the Black Christ stand as factual examples of Portobelo’s fascinating history and rich heritage. Set in one of the most beautiful bays on the Caribbean Coast, you will also find a lush national park, miles of white, sandy beaches, and some of the best snorkeling and diving in Central America.
