DAY 1 SAN JOSE

DAY 2 SAN JOSE - ARENAL

Arenal Volcano towers over lush green pastures and plantations of yucca, papaya, and cassava. Rushing waters heated by the volcano are channeled into pools at Tabacon Hot Springs, offering a relaxing experience after a day of horseback riding or hiking. Lake Arenal remains the best spot in Costa Rica for windsurfing. You may hike at the foot of the volcano, visit La Fortuna waterfall on horseback, or take a full day excursion to the Venado caves or to Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve. And, at night, the most active of all Costa Rica's volcanoes displays a true show of fiery explosions, which will give you a hint of how the earth must have looked in its tumultuous beginnings. DAY 3 ARENAL

DAY 4 ARENAL - MONTEVERDE

Frequently draped in mist and clouds, Monteverde captures the imagination of even the most cynical among us. It emanates a sense of ancient and enduring life. Algae, mosses and lichens get a foothold on the constantly wet surfaces, providing a place for orchids, bromeliads, ferns and innumerable other plants to cling to. So prolific is this growth in the cloud forest that bare branches are virtually non-existent. And if you look carefully, sitting quietly overhead, its long feathery tail swaying gently in the breeze, there is a scarlet and emerald bird that seems to embody the spirit of the cloud forest: The Resplendent Quetzal. DAY 5 MONTEVERDE

Day at leisure. Suggested activities: Horseback riding; Sky Walk; Sky Trek; canopy tour; visit to Santa Elena Reserve; butterfly garden; cheese factory. Services included today: Car rental; overnight accommodations at Helliconia; hotel taxes.

DAY 6 MONTEVERDE - QUEPOS

Quepos, originally a sleepy fishing village, is nowadays one of the best known vacation spots in the Americas. This charming area is full of surprises: Quaint hotels perched over hills offering exceptional sunset views, excellent sportfishing in its blue waters, Manuel Antonio National Park, which ranks as one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful parks with its display of white sand beaches, evergreen forest, and magnificent lookouts over the ocean, and Jardin Gaia, the first official Wildlife Rescue Center. DAY 7/8 QUEPOS

Days at leisure. Suggested activities: Relaxing at the beach; surfing; sea kayaking; hiking in Manuel Antonio National Park; rafting the Naranjo River (Dry season only); sportfishing; horseback riding; sunset cruise. DAY 9 QUEPOS - SAN JOSE - OUT
